‘Hi Sandhya. It is so kind of you to respond. I thought you would never speak to me! To be honest, I was surprised that you even messaged. So, how is everything?’

Sneha had called Sandhya at the time she asked her to.

‘All is well with me. You tell me, why did you want to speak to me? And what made you think that I wouldn’t talk to you? I have just been busy settling down in a new place.’

‘I thought you have already formed an opinion about me, and that is why you didn’t respond to my messages earlier. I don’t know what’s cooking between your husband and mine against me.’

‘I don’t know where all this is coming from. Why would Nitesh cook anything against you?’

‘I saw your marriage album on Facebook and found Shekhar in the pictures.’

‘Yes, your husband did attend our wedding. I believe Nitesh and Shekhar are course mates and the best of friends. So Nitesh had invited him. What’s the problem with that?’

‘Yes, of course! Who knows better about their closeness? I was equally close to Nittu till he married you! Then all of a sudden, he stopped taking my calls and blocked me on all social networking sites. He doesn’t even respond to my messages now.’

Sandhya marked the sarcasm in her words. She also noticed how she had addressed her husband as Nittu. She didn’t appreciate any of her words and snapped back.

‘Are you implying that I have stopped Nitesh from talking to you? I don’t know anything about you except that you are Shekhar’s wife. And yes, Nitesh had asked me to stay away from you because you are loud and annoying.’

‘Oh! I see! So, he finds me annoying now? He didn’t find me annoying when we were sleeping on the same bed for a week in my husband’s absence. Why didn’t he think so when he rested his head on my bosom while I wiped his tears after Priya’s death? Not once did he mention that I annoyed him when we spoke for hours until a few days before he married you. And now that he has settled in matrimony and my marriage has hit the rocks, he finds me annoying? He seems to have forgotten that had we not intervened, Priya would have divorced Nitesh before she died!’

Suddenly, the conversation had taken an intriguing turn. Sandhya was more glued now. Sneha had unconsciously opened a can of worms. So, his so-called ‘perfect’ marriage with Priya was on the verge of a divorce before she died under mysterious circumstances. And, that too saved by some friend’s intervention. This was a completely new angle to the story about Priya and Nitesh she had heard so far.

Although, nothing seemed to surprise Sandhya that hard after the night she discovered the content of the tan briefcase. She knew that her over-possessive husband could kill his wife if she even smiled at another officer. Now, it turned out that Nitesh had even slept with his best friend’s wife.
